Data-Driven Approach for Alarm Fatigue
Excel Medical’s Alarm Navigator™ is a web-based alarm analytics tool that provides hospitals’ patient safety and alarm fatigue committees a rigorous, data-driven approach to alarm analysis and management. Alarm Navigator acquires clinical alarms from GE Healthcare and Philips Healthcare patient monitoring systems, as well as ancillary medical devices such as ventilators. It is the only technology that captures alarms and corresponding waveforms simultaneously for deep analysis and differentiation between false-positive and actionable alarms. Offering near immediate customized reports and alarm analysis for the entire hospital enterprise, Alarm Navigator puts alarm analytics in the hands of the clinician experts – how they want the data, when they want the data.
The Joint Commission Mandate
The Joint Commission indicates that 80 patients died and 13 were severely injured in U.S. hospitals between January 2009 and June 2012 due to alarm-related problems. It believes those numbers represent less than 10% of all such incidents.
Starting in January 2015, the Commission is requiring hospitals to make alarm safety a top priority and to find ways to reduce the risk of alarm fatigue.
